About the Self Symposium

selfsympThe Rev. Linn and Betty Self Bible Symposium will convene on September 30 - October 1, 2010 at the South Texas School of Christian Studies.

Linn Self served as President of SCS for ten years. His wife, Betty, also served as an administrative assistant at SCS. Linn and Betty retired from SCS in 2005.

The purpose of the symposium is to provide opportunities for students, pastors, clergy, and laity to engage notable biblical scholars and clinicians.

Keynote Speakers for the 2010 Self Symposium will include Dr. Cleophus LaRue and Dr. Calvin Miller.

 

Speakers

Dr. Cleophus LaRue

Princeton Theological Seminary’s Francis Landey Patton Associate Professor of Homiletics, received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Baylor University, his M.Div. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton Seminary. He specializes in the theory and method of African American preaching and worship. An ordained minister in the National Baptist Convention of America, LaRue is the former pastor of two churches in Texas as well as the former interim pastor of churches in Harlem and Jamaica Queens, New York. He is a frequent speaker at churches, seminaries, and conferences throughout the country and is a member of the Academy of Homiletics.

 

Dr. Calvin Miller

The research professor and distinguished writer-in-residence assumed his new duties after retiring from Beeson Divinity School in 2007. Miller earned his B.S. from Oklahoma Baptist University, and his M.Div. as well as D.Min. from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as pastor of Westside Baptist Church, Omaha, Nebraska, and professor of communication and ministry studies, as well as writer-in-residence for Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, before going to Beeson. Miller is a poet, artist, novelist and evangelist, who has authored of more than 40 books and numerous articles on religion and preaching. His books include The Empowered Communicator, Market-Place Preaching, Spirit, Word and Story, The Sermon Maker, O Shepherd, Where Art Thou?, and Preaching: The Art of Narrative Exposition. He and his wife, Barbara, have two adult children.
